Pro. Xiangchen Hou is recognized as the expert on pavement detection technique and Road maintenance technologies. His research, teaching, specification development and software tools have helped made significant technology advancements in the above fields. He has been developing the automatic pavement condition detector since 2001, and the detector has been used for ten years and serviced for several provinces in China.

Pro. Hou has been the project chief for many projects in P.R. China that enhancing pavement structure design and analysis, pavement surface characteristics (Roughness/texture/noise), Road maintenance technologies and Sustainable Road Network Maintenance and Management. Examples of these projects include: National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Ministry of Transportation of China, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Guangdong and Zhejiang Provincial Transportation Department, and etc. Pro. Hou has also edited some specifications and standards published by the Ministry of Transportation of China.

Pro. Hou has been  a member of International Society for Concrete Pavements, road transportation and engineering teaching guidance committee of ministry of education of China, Heilongjiang Province Scientific Advisory Committee of experts committee. He has been the director of Highway society of Heilongjiang Province.

Pro. Hou received many awards such as:  the first prize in China Highway and Transportation Society (CHTS) in 2008, the second prize in CHTS in 2005 and 2011, the third prize in CHTS in 2008, the third prize in Heilongjiang province of China in 2012, the third prize in Guangdong province of China in 2012.

His research work has been featured in over 40 professional publications, 70+ reports and 10+authorized patents.
